Arsenal and Belgium international defender Thomas Vermaelen used to be one of the club’s best defenders in recent years, however recently he has fallen down the pecking order to such an extent that it now seems he is considering his future with the Gunners.

Vermaelen has been seen as one of Arsenal’s best defenders in recent times because he showed a real passion and determination to win every challenge as well fight for the game. He is strong in the tackle and has pace to spare; he is also good on the air despite not being the tallest of defenders and so I think he is actually a very good player.
However unfortunately for him injuries seem to have got the worse of him and it seems that it made him lose a lot of his abilities on the pitch that previously made him one of the league’s best. And his failure to return to the starting eleven means he is now considering his future with Arsenal, with the World Cup year approaching.

Vermaelen was quoted saying: “I’ll have to think about that when it’s necessary. January is still a few months ahead. Of course, never playing will not be the ideal situation for me to go to the World Cup, that’s for sure. People ask me if I panic because I’m not playing a lot but I’m not. I have spoken to the manager but it will remain private between us. Things can happen in a split second and change my situation. That can happen tomorrow or next weekend. In that case, we will speak differently in January. I have to be ready for that.”

Admittedly Vermaelen was the main cause of a lot of stupid goals conceded last season and he did deserve to be dropped because Koscielny and Mertesacker were outshining him in almost every aspect. However nearly a year on I think he deserves another chance and he did play well against West Brom in the League Cup. Vermaelen has been one of my favourite players in recent years and many believed he was going to be the next Tony Adams and lead Arsenal to glory as a commanding captain; however things haven’t turned out that way at all and now he may be on the verge of leaving the Gunners. He will no doubt be pleased to have played for Belgium during the international break, but must be despearate to get back into regular action for Arsenal.
