Wenger – Arsenal are planning to keep Van Persie (and Podolski can play on the wing)

The Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger spoke about the possibility of transferring the prolific German forward Lukas Podolski, but according to the Frenchman the deal is still far from being completed.

Wenger also felt the need to say that if the German striker will join it won’t be because they want to have a replacement for Arsenal club captain Robin Van Persie.

“Our plan is, and I will not comment further on that, to keep Robin van Persie even if we buy any player,” said Wenger.

“He’s (Podolski) a good football player, above all. He can play for us because he can play central, play right and play on the left. He has 96 caps for Germany and is 26 years old, which is the best age. He’s available at a reasonable price, if we can reach an agreement, but at the moment we’re nowhere near.

“He is a good attacker, a sharp player.

“He is not just a player who makes and scores the goals, he is also a team player and that’s what I really like.”

Podolski made it clear that he wanted to leave Koln after he made a few bad statements regarding the club, so he’s highly likely to join the Gunners when the summer transfer window will crack open.

Do you think he’ll be happy to play on the wing with RVP in the centre?

  1. ——————— Szczesny
    Sagna — Koscielny — Vermaelen — Gibbs/Santos
    —————— Song — Wilshere
Chamberlain — New CAM — (Podolski)
    ————————- RvP

    Need to get:
    # Gotze or Eriksen
    # Hazard or Muniain
    # Vertonghen
    # Podolski

  2. There is a whole big difference to playing left and right to playing left wing and right wing. at arsenal i believe when we play 4231 the wide players of the 3 play like inside lefts and inside rights with the full backs playing more like wingers. however when play 451 which is quite often the wide players in the 5 play more like wingers with the full backs concentrating more on defensive duties. therefore in a 4231 podolski will be fine and in a 451 he can drop into the no.10 role behind the main striker if not replaced by a genuine winger. personally i dont think formation is so important having the quality is far more important and the ability to understand your responsibilities.

  3. Podolsky and RVP, Podolsky and Walcott, Walcott and RVP in a 442 🙂 with Ox and Gervinho wide and Wilshire, Song, Rosicky, Coq, Arteta all sharing center of the park duties, Song and Wilshire can alternate between DM and CAM same with Arteta, and if Diaby recovers we know he’s quality as well… Now we need a new LB like L. Baines, and our first 11 is as strong as ever, and that’s not considering any other new signings 🙂 makes me drool, now if life was like football manager or FIFA 12…..sigh
