Arsenal could be on the verge of throwing down a real marker in the transfer market. The English and Spanish media is awash with reports that Gonzalo Higuain has agreed personal terms with Arsenal and Real Madrid have accepted the Gunners’ offer of around £22 million.

There are also rumours that the 25-year old striker will be in London this week for his medical, while the bookies have slashed the odds of him coming to the Emirates down to 1/5 on, which is usually a very strong indication that the deal is done. However, we all know that until it is officially announced then we can take nothing as certain.

It is great and exciting news for us long suffering Gooners, though. Higuain is a player of real quality, which is probably why Arsene Wenger has put everything else on the back burner until he knew whether or not he could bring him to Arsenal. He is exactly the type of striker we need at the club, with great finishing along with his all round power, pace and technical ability.

For people who doubt his ability, let me remind you that he has scored 20 international goals for Argentina in just 32 games. His scoring stats for his first two seasons at Real Madrid were not great, but he was still a teenager at the time and was getting used to a new country and continent after leaving River Plate in Argentina. Since then, he has scored 97 La Liga goals in just 146 games, beating players like Ronaldo and Ibrahimovich in the charts along the way.

I think he will be the next really big striker star for Arsenal, joining the list of greats that includes Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp. Do you agree?

  1. If we buy only Higuain without more solid signings then are we back to square one as he alone cannot make the massive difference we need to challenge for the EPL title. We must strengthen in depth to make his purchase worthwhile and not just more millions down the drain! The team is crying out for a no-nonsense defensive MF and another creative MF in the mould of Santi or even better!

  2. I disasgree with darlingbudsofArse although I do love the name.
We ain’t that far short of the other top 3 as we proved when the team played so well in the last 15 league games. 12 wins 2 draws 1 defeat is championship winning form.
THEN you add Higuain and he has the capability of becoming a complete legend at this club and gives us the MAIN ingredient that was missing last year. Someone with confidence in his own ability to score which is what gave us such a poor record against the big 3. Numerous chances but nobody to take them regularly = losing against the big teams.
With Higuain and Fellaini we would have a player who can get BIG GAME goqals and an absolute beast who won’t run or hide from nobody
Can’t wait for the new season
    A trophy – possible , very possible
    The future – A certainty

    1. Nor do I agree with your assessment of the situation as we did not beat any team of noteworthy amongst the 12 games you talked about! Who beat us before the run of those 12 games- Spurs; with which team did we draw- ManU. So amongst the top 5 teams last season, only Spurs were we able to beat once and that was at the Emirates against their 10 men! Man City beat us home and away so did Chelsea and we managed to draw with ManU when they had already won the league otherwise it would have been same old, same old… So ur analysis is wrong dear fellow goner and until we address the entire team this coming season, we will win ZILCH!!!!

      1. The team improved a lot, especially defensively, throughout the season. Many players, like Giroud, Podolski, should have better seasons next time. You’re right though, the good run we had at the end was against small and middle clubs, with tight margins.
You’re also right when you say we need depth. The successful teams have good squads, not just a good starting 11. The only positions you can really say Arsenal have depth in are LB and ACM (Cazorla, Rosicky, Wilshere). You could argue that we should strengthen all other positions. E.g. Arteta and Ramsey were very effective towards the end of the season, but if one gets injured we’re screwed. The only real cover for our wings (Walcott and Podolski) is Oxlade-Chamberlain (Cazorla and Rosicky are not really wings though they can play there). Etc.
