I know that the years of austerity are supposed to be over at Arsenal Football Club, when Arsene Wenger was accused of putting the accounts before the team and treating the club’s money as if it was his own and his name was Ebeneezer Scrooge, but I don’t think the Arsenal boss is ready to start spending like Mourinho or Mancini just yet.

So I was amazed to read in the Metro that reports coming from Portugal claim that is exactly what is happening, after the Gunners put in a massive bid of 30 million euros for William Carvalho of Sporting Lisbon. The fact that the Portugal international is just 22-years old and has only played 30 league games for his club, suggest to me that this story is a bit unlikely, to say the least.

Carvalho is a promising and versatile player, who can be a centre back or defensive midfielder, but with the likes of Sami Khedira available for that money, I think Wenger would need more than promise to go on. The report goes on to say that the Portuguese club have turned down our offer and are looking for more like €45 million for their young player. Has the world gone mad?
