He did not have to say anything about the situation at Arsenal and whether he would be signing a new contract, seeing out the final year of his current deal or securing a transfer away from north London during the summer transfer window, but Alexis Sanchez chose to give his thoughts on the matter to the football media in Chile.
Not only do the striker’s comments reported by Metro tell us that Alexis certainly wants to say goodbye to Arsenal this summer, it also suggests to me that he may start trying to force the hand of Arsene Wenger to sell him.
The 26-year old said, ‘I want to play the Champions League.
‘The decision does not depend on me, I have to wait for Arsenal.
‘I’ve made my decision, now I wait for Arsenal’s reply. The idea is to play and win the Champions League. I’ve dreamt about it since I was a kid.’
With Arsenal having missed out on Europe’s elite club competition for the first time in 20 years, we cannot offer Sanchez the chance to play in it this season and he could well argue that the Gunners are nowhere near actually winning the thing.
But will Wenger be able to resist the pressure from his star player?
